Nocton Dairies Ltd - waste disposal

Lincolnshire Echo

Why we need to kick up a stink over super dairy plan

Agriculture
'Agriculture provides wildlife habitats, a well-loved landscape and a place for recreation but it also has some less desirable impacts on the environment.', so say the Environment Agency (EA).

Somewhat reassuringly EA also mentions: 'We regulate farming through regimes such as Nitrate Vulnerable Zone (NVZ) compliance, water abstraction licences, discharge consents and farm waste regulations.

I find it rather odd therefore that Nocton Dairies have chosen to locate their huge dairy within a sensitive Groundwater Source Protection Zone.  It will be imperative that EA pays close attention to the applicants' plans and how they intend to conduct their business.

Anaerobic Digestion (AD)

In a bid to make the Nocton Dairy site more environmentally-friendly and to improve their economic model, the original plans showed that an anaerobic digester would be constructed for Year 2 operation.  If you are interested I have included some references here to further your knowledge of the topic:

Anaerobic digestion offers farmers food for thought

So what is Anaerobic Digestion?
If you are not au-fait with what anaerobic digestion entails, you may like to read this.

With any waste disposal facility (which is what this AD will be), there needs to be tight regulation for its operation.  This document sets out how the Environment Agency will apply waste regulatory controls to the anaerobic digestion of agricultural manure and slurry and the use of the resulting digestate as a fertiliser on agricultural land in England and Wales.
