Community Led Action for Nocton

"Join the CLAN - planning ahead for our future"

You should by now have received a leaflet through your door. If not, I will reproduce much of the content here so you know what this is all about.

Aim

'To produce a far seeing document that is inspired by members of the Nocton community, submitted for adoption by the Parish Council, that will lead to a sustained improvement in the quality and value of living within the boundaries of the community.'

What is a Community Led Plan?

Community Led Planning (CLP) is a step-by-step process that enables every citizen to participate in, and contribute to improving the social, economic, environmental and cultural well-being of their local area.  It is:
  • A shared vision for the community for the next five to ten years containing a detailed action plan with a clear statement of who, what, why, when, for achieving this vision.
  • The community decide the issues to be tackled based on information provided by community participation, research and surveys.
  • A process by which the whole community can voice their opinions about what they would wish to see happen in their local area in the future.
Across England people are getting involved in CLP's, volunteering their time and energy to help shape the future of their community.  By coming together, evidencing local needs, exploring solutions and implementing a plan of action, they are generating a stronger, more sustainable society that is less reliant on the State to get things done.

Our first (open) CLP meeting was held on 20 April 2011 and we were thrilled to see that over 40 people came along to offer their initial ideas.  We began by talking to each other about what we like about Nocton and what keeps us here.  It seems many people love living here because they feel their viallge is an attractive, peaceful, safe and tranquil place to live.  Would you agree?

We also explored what we dislike and what improvements we would like to see in the future.  These thoughts were more varied and naturally depended upon people's needs and what they enjoy doing in their spare time.

Suggestions were made for:
  1. Changing utilitarian lighting and signage for more vintage items.
  2. The possibility of a village shop and/or cafe (with the opportunity to sell fresh produce grown locally by residents, as well as 'emergency' groceries).
  3. Residents wish to make use of the fenced field opposite the Village Hall (with recreational facilities for everyone).
  4. Enhancing the overall appearance of the village with flowers and reinstating the old red telephone box and painting the railway bridge.
  5. Improving the Village Hall to make it physically more welcoming, so that more groups will make use of it for their activities.
Having collected 40 people's ideas, we need to test them and build upon them before we are sure we have everyone's wish list.  Please will you complete the detachable questionnaire from the leaflet and either:
  • Bring it with you to the meeting in Nocton Village Hall on 4th September between 12pm and 4pm, or
  • Place it in one of the dedicated envelopes in the Village Hall or the Post Office.
Thankyou.

  1. good luck with this plan. Previous attempts to get the village united and to improve the community have started with keeness and then failed miserably. hopefully the dairy campaign has taught many that in order to have a community, effort has to be put in. With regard to the Tranquil peaceful village - yes Nocton would be if only the HGV route and traffic problems were finally sorted - until then its not peaceful for those living on the main street and never will be. Numerous attempts at traffic calming always failed miserable because those living away from the main street werent bothered about doing anything.
