Wellhead Lane

The Beck

It was brought to my attention the other day, that only the grating in the Beck had been cleared when village residents were expecting a full clean-out. I therefore raised the matter with Councillor Ian Goldsworthy over the weekend.

Councillor Goldsworthy has since telephoned North Kesteven District Council to find out the current position and was told more work is due to take place. The funding has only recently been obtained to clear the village becks, not just the one for Nocton, and work is due to start in the next few weeks. The grating has been cleared purely as a precautionary measure, to avoid any risk of flooding arising from the predicted heavy rain.

Clearing the Beck will entail more than just cutting back vegetation and a mechanical digger may well be needed to tackle the job. We are hoping that Nocton will feature as first village on the list, for necessary work to be carried out.

Nocton History

Many of you know Sheila Redshaw who lives on Wellhead Lane and her interest of collecting data about Nocton e.g. through paper cuttings, articles, magazines and photographs etc. This has much significance for those interested in the history of Nocton and Sheila has recently been wondering how she could make this collection more widely available, without the 'archive' being lent out and possibly lost to future Noctonians (if that is the right word to use).

As a first step, I have therefore offered my services to create a list of contents of the collection. I am currently going through every single book and folder in Sheila's collection and listing all the Nocton-related information in an Excel spreadsheet.

I am recording the Date of the item, the Title of the article, the Source of the item, a brief idea of the Content, the Folder No where it can be located and the Type of folder concerned. The spreadsheet will then be able to be searched using any of these descriptors... at very least it will give a unique timeline record of Nocton over the last 40 years or so.

I have just completed twelve scrapbooks and already there are 752 entries in the spreadsheet. I can assure you this is going to be a lengthy job, but a welcome one to occupy me throughout the dark winter months when the evenings draw in and there is nothing worth watching on TV!

Discussions are still taking place with Sheila as to how to safeguard this 'collection' for posterity and yet make it available to the community in the future.
