Goodbye and thankyou

I have lived in the village since Jul 2005 and established this blog in Jan 2007. The original aim was to record much of the miscellany relating to village history left lying around in cardboard boxes, thus making it available online for others to read.

It then morphed into a campaigning blog during Nocton Dairies plan to establish a huge factory farm on Nocton Heath. The blog has since transformed into a resource for advertising local events and happenings in and around the village, occasionally for providing comment on public administration and planning applications.

After much deliberation, I feel it is now time to get on with my life and enjoy my retirement, without constantly seeking items to keep the blog populated. The existing material will remain 'live' for archive purposes, however it will no longer be maintained or kept up to date. Comments will still be published though where submitted.

The following resources will still be available for your local information:

'What's on in Nocton' [published on Facebook]

'The Nocton News' [published by Nocton Parish Council]

Thanks for reading my blog over the years, wherever you are located... and goodbye.
Did the ground move for you?

A 3.9-magnitude earthquake centred in north-east Lincolnshire has reportedly been felt up to 60 miles (100km) away.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) said it happened at 23:14 BST on Saturday with the epicentre in Grimsby at a depth of 11 miles (18km).

It was felt mainly in Lincolnshire, and Hull, the BGS added.

It comes nearly a decade after the 5.2-magnitude earthquake in Market Rasen, Lincolnshire, which was felt widely across England and Wales.

Independent organisation European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said it had received reports from people 100km from the epicentre who had felt the tremor.
Tuesday 12 Jun 2018

The next meeting will be held in the Village Hall at 7.00pm on 12 June. This is the Agenda for the meeting.

Item 6: Redevelopment of Village Hall

The sums involved with the rebuilding of the Village Hall will amount to half a million pounds or more, much of it funded from our council tax over the next 50 years, so it is only to be expected there is public scrutiny over how this sum is being spent.

Looking back in my blog dated 16 Feb 2018, I summarised the Tree Officer's concerns over the planning application. Since then, we have seen that planning permission has been granted, but with certain conditions. I note that before any work can commence demolishing the current Village Hall, North Kesteven District Council have required site investigation works to be undertaken.

I am interested to see if the scope and nature of these works have now been agreed with the District Planning Authority - and whether or not this work has been contracted out and what the extra burden will be on the public purse?

With the delay in starting work on rebuilding the Village Hall and potential alterations to the construction design, is it clear yet how this will impact on the overall projected costs from Simons Construction e.g. will the revised costing still be able to be contained within the extent of a Public Works Loan of £500,000... or will further funds have to be raised?

There were also other issues to be ratified, one of which is concerning legal advice on a number of covenant-related matters. This also involved contact with the owner of the Village Hall car park to obtain approval to the new designs for the Village Hall. Whilst I see this is proposed to be dealt with following the exclusion of the public and press, a broad outline of the issues involved could perhaps be highlighted?

I see there is an Agenda entry about the Proposed Redevelopment of the Village Hall for the meeting on Tuesday 12 Jun 2018. It would be very helpful to the community if councillors could give a comprehensive update of the current situation, especially regarding the above mentioned aspects.

Response from Parish Council

Dear Geoff,

Thank you for your email of 8 June, 2018 to the Parish Clerk. Which Ruth has forwarded to me as she is now on holiday for two weeks.

There was, in fact, a very detailed discussion about the project to rebuild our village hall at the Annual Parish Meeting on 22 May when all of the points you have raised, and others, were covered with Simons’ representatives who were also present. As you have noted, there will be a further discussion and update on this matter at the Parish Council meeting tomorrow which, of course, you would be most welcome to attend.

I would, however, like to reassure you that as councillors we are working extremely hard to ensure that the overall cost of the project is kept as low as possible as we are all acutely aware of the need to minimise the call on the public purse.

Kind regards
Ian Goldsworthy
Chair of Nocton Parish Council

Hi Ian

Thanks for the reply.

I note your comments but have concerns that the meeting you refer to has no formal record of proceedings or content.

I and possibly others, were unable to attend the Annual Parish Meeting and I may not be able to attend Tuesday either due to personal reasons, hence my email to the Clerk.

Non attendees can only rely on formal Minutes and the Parish Council is there to cater to all the populous, not just the few who can attend meetings.

I would therefore hope that the full details of the current situation can be documented on Tuesday evening...
Latest report

The Cricket Club is having mixed fortunes this season. After a good win last month, they lost away to Scothern on 3 June. Scothern scored 109 when they batted, but Nocton only managed 40 when they batted second. Consequently, Scothern got 20 points for winning, but Nocton still got 5 pts for getting Scothern out for not very many. So now it's time to look forward to the first home game of the season, and to see the new pavilion in action, on Sunday 10 June, with play starting at 1.30pm.
Away - Woodhall Spa - 20 May

Nocton Cricket Club did not have a match on Sunday 13 May, but they were due to play Woodhall Spa away on 20 May. Unfortunately, they could not raise a team, and so that was effectively a defeat.

On the same day, the village of Scothern could not raise a team, either. Thus, so far this season, Nocton has had one win and two losses.

If anyone would like to play cricket, please contact the secretary, Rob Garfoot - Tel: 07714 641373.

The team's next match will be away to Scothern on 3 June, so let's hope that between them, they can find enough players for a match!
Beer Fest Weekend

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all who were involved in the Nocton Beer Festival over the last few days.

Big special thanks to Stu & Steve for the set up and planning of the event as well as their efforts each day, to Caz for her epic support throughout and her ever amazing cakes, to Pitmaster Greg for his hours on the grill on Sunday, to Lorraine for her selfless volunteering at the bar and to my amazing wife Vicki for baking stunning breads & serving fab Belgian waffles despite being 7 months pregnant, and of course to our stalwart Bar staff (Amy, Dale, Kat & Tamara) who worked their behinds off to serve the masses. And to everyone else who made this event the success it was.

Finally, I would like to thank the people of the community of Nocton & surrounding areas who came out in force to support your local club. You are our life-blood and the reason we volunteers have the passion to keep this important social hub going. I hope you had a great time and enjoyed the event but know that the money we took will all be invested in the future of this key facility. We are as ever a non-profit, volunteer run, social enterprise for the community. As we move towards the eventual rebuild planned for later this year, we aim to come back with a modern, fit for purpose facility that will be an asset for many generations. Events like this weekend are essential to generate the funds needed to set this up.

Thank you all and I hope to see you in as many numbers (if not more) at this years Oktoberfest at the end of September before we plan to close.

Yours most gratefully, Dan Marshall
Chairman, Nocton Club

P.S. there is still some great real ale left so please make the effort to pop down at some point this week to enjoy the range of great quality real ales. We pride ourselves in providing for you the best and most interesting beers that most Village pubs would be most envious having on their bars. Cheers.
High Flight by John Magee Jr
Wellingore Parish Council is chaired by author Roger Coles and includes District Councillor Catherine Mills. Together with volunteers from Wellingore, Navenby, the RAF and Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage, good progress is being made on the planned memorial to the pilot and poet John Gillespie Magee Jr. to be placed in the Millfield Park, along the A607. It is part of our heritage explored in Roger’s book, High Flight.
Higher than the Angel of the North, wider with a 31m wingspan and heavier than a real Lancaster, being built of durable steel, not light aluminium. It is a fitting commemoration of 100 years of the RAF and the contributions made by people of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. The artistic tribute (without the poppies) reflects Lincolnshire’s long-standing contribution to engineering, agriculture and aerial defence. Almost a third of the £100,000 needed has already been raised. The application came with a huge list of supporters and an excellent speaker in Ken Saddler.
Update

As many dog-walkers will have noticed, the reconstruction of the Club's pavilion is proceeding well. At the time of writing, the walls and roof are being clad, and the septic tank for the new drains has been installed. Because of the wet weather there had been pools of water in the furrows between the ridges, but now the outfield and the playing square have dried out a little, and they have been cut for the first time in preparation for the first home game at 1.30pm on Sunday 10th June.
Pre-season practice sessions have taken place outside at Blankney, and so the Club is grateful for the help which that Club has provided.

The team's first game of the season took place on Sunday 22 April, at Hartsholme, and produced the first points, although in a defeat. Nocton scored 96 with David Franklin providing the top score of 20. Hartsholme scored 97-4, with Terry Enerver taking 3-14. So that gave Nocton 2 bowling pts, but Hartsholme 20 pts for winning.
Successful evening

I understand the Fashion Show held on 30th April was a well attended event with bargains abound. My wife came back with a bag full to overflowing!

All items of clothing were modelled by volunteers after which orders were taken. The proceeds from the evening (including the raffle) was a respectable £400.15 for church funds.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
