Time of goodwill and cheer

Christmas Tree

Nocton Parish Council have taken delivery of a rather large Christmas tree for bringing some festive cheer to the front of the Village Hall for 2011.

The location used in previous years was somewhat strangely situated down the right-hand side of the Village Hall... in my opinion not the most obvious place for viewing from the road, but one that was probably dictated by the electric power supply. Furthermore, only a small diameter pipe had been installed, which rather limited the size of the tree which could be purchased and erected.

For this year, it was generally felt there was a better location for siting the Christmas tree. As there was no facility in place, Councillor Goldsworthy arranged for a 24" x 18" x 18" hole to be dug ready for the delivery and installation of the tree, which arrived this morning. However, this is only a temporary fix for 2011 and a more permanent fixture (a nine-inch diameter pipe) will be concreted in place for 2012 onwards.

The tree was quite heavy and cumbersome, requiring three men to lift it into place. Unfortunately there was insufficient time to complete the job properly today, as both people involved with the installation had previous commitments booked elsewhere. Adjustments will be made on Friday (25th Nov) to counter any leaning following settlement of the ground and the hole. It will also be given a more permanent anchorage with nylon rope guy lines - and the safety fencing will also be redone with more heavy duty posts.

The final job will entail stringing the low voltage lights from the Village Hall to the Christmas tree, with a timer placed in the circuit. Hopefully this will be completed Friday in readiness for the Xmas Fayre on Saturday.

Vintage Fashion Show and Afternoon Tea Party

By all accounts this was a very successful event with much positive feedback. The following report was circulated by the organiser, Julie Partridge.

'And it was all because you came on board and contributed your time and talents.

The result being we now have some funds in the Festival Coffers but even more importantly we have learned how to put on a show and give people something else really positive to talk about Nocton.
So here is the cast and huge thank you goes to:
  • John for arranging for the loan of tables, staging for the catwalk and PA system. We are making a small donation to the Fire and Rescue to thank them for allowing us to use such a professional piece of kit.
  • John and Wayne & Geoff for setting up the staging and technical equipment and Steve Moore for the use of his projector and screen, always knew it would come in some day!
  • Wayne for arranging for us to have use of the Stag and Nick for his jeep. My brother will not forget the spin you took him for and it did help him avoid buying my sister-in-law that dress!
  • Jane, Chris, Natalie, Alicia, Mike, Pat and Jess you all modelled beautifully and looked stunning in vintage and retro. Without you there was no show. Please pass this onto Alica and Pat for me.
  • Maria for handing the tea party so professionally, it ran smoothly because of your skills and leadership. Everyone had a real Maria's Tea Room treat and if you ever fancy a business partnership let me know!
  • Alice, Maisie and Jack showed us all how we can rely upon them when hard work is needed. They got stuck in and made team Maria a winner! Alice, please pass on our thanks to Maisie and Jack as I don't have their e-mails and take a big pat on the back yourself.
  • Val, Jilly, Jan, Maria, Ruth, Gary, me & Terry for the delicious cakes and sandwiches which adorned the cake stands and received great feedback. I know just how hard it is to bake under pressure and the fact that they were all home made was just perfect! We had a few more than needed so we sold some on the day and I shall be bringing a few round to anyone who says yes tonight!
  • Chris & Mike, Mandi & Gordon, Jon and Tracy; you all brought with you stunning stalls and enabled everyone to look, try and even buy great gear. You showed the greatest commitment to vintage and Nocton in so far there is never any guarantee of sales and yet you put is loads of effort which really paid off for us. I hope the experience was fun and I am certain more people will be buying vintage in the future and I have been asked for your details as the school is now thinking of doing something like this in the future. Please let me know if you are happy for me to pass on your numbers?
  • Jessie for being our official photographer - we are all looking forward to seeing the fruits of your labour and Mandi and Gordon wish to consider some for their website. They are also offering you the opportunity of taking more pictures wearing their collection anytime you wish!
  • Lynne Cant donated lovely linen and jewellery from her Aunt's estate. I will be holding onto the linen for future Festival events and the items that did not make the tombola will be sold in the summer and added to the total funds. Any residue I am instructed to donate to St Barnabus Hospice.
The shabby chic china I managed to collect over the last three months have become my new hobby and if anyone does want to hire it for future events please let me know.

If there is anyone I have forgotten I will be most embarrassed so please thank them for me and I just add I had a fabulous time and now need to give my voice and eyes a bit of a rest. Terry says thank goodness!

Warmest Wishes
Julie'
