Intensive Dairy Farming
The debate by our local MP, Stephen Phillips QC, in Westminster Hall yesterday couldn't have come at a better time for local residents... and for campaigners fighting factory farms.
Many, many people have been lobbying long and hard, trying to force a comprehensive debate about intensive dairying... and hopefully Stephen will be able to bring pressure to bear for such a detailed review. It will be too late when these type of industrial development have dominated our landscape... all but destroying the small family dairy farms... who are the stewards of our wonderful countryside.
When I embarked on my own research into the dairy industry, after Nocton Dairies submitted their application back in 2009, little did I know how complex the topic was - it is multi-threaded - and the business needs a 'root and branch' examination in my opinion. The UK is not America and it is not always pertinent to slavishly follow practices from 'across the pond'. We may need new ideas in our dairy industry, but we could be importing a whole host of other unique problems here if we are not careful.
