Women's Institute - News

News from the Nocton and District WI

The following report was received by email last night:

"January brought along what is fast becoming a very popular annual event when 11 members enjoyed a delicious Afternoon Tea, this year at “The Ferryboat” in Washingborough. The choice and quality of the sandwiches and cake was excellent and the huge scones with individual pots of clotted cream and jam were delicious. Everyone agreed that it was a very enjoyable afternoon and lifted the gloom of the long January days.

February brought the launch of a new venture for our WI – weekly swimming sessions using the facilities at Winchester Growers. Every Tuesday the pool is hired for an hour 1pm-2pm and paid for by those attending, the cost being a very reasonable £3. The facilities are excellent, the pool a good size and the water is warm. Some people wish to undertake a few steady lengths with a gossip in between, others to set themselves a certain distance or number of lengths to attain.  Either way it is a great afternoon for friendship and fitness.

February`s meeting was an Open meeting where Mary Porter gave a talk on Wildlife Garden. It was a very well attended meeting of both WI members and visitors. Mary was initially a Biology teacher but for the last 26 years she has been involved, in one way another, with promoting and protecting Lincolnshire wildlife. Her talk was based upon the three needs of all wildlife – shelter, food and water – and she stressed how with the balance of nature having been so disturbed by the changes in recent agricultural practices that all of us within our own gardens, whether big or small, have an important part to play in supporting our wildlife. Her talk was interesting, informative and amusing accompanied by some lovely slides. She certainly gave us all food for thought and reminded us that as well as this weekend hosting Valentine’s day it is also National Bird Box weekend. The competition of a Winter Arrangement was won by Julie, with Jane in second place and Barbara in third. The raffle prize, a beautiful dark purple and cream orchid, was won by Maryann.

The meeting in March is on the 9th and as well as being the AGM, WI member Kathy is going to share her experiences and knowledge of Fostering children. Although not an open meeting anyone who may be considering joining the WI is very welcome to come along to meet us all and see if you think joining the WI is for you. Whilst deciding if you want to become a fully fledged WI member we just ask for a £3 payment for each meeting you attend. The full programme will be available at this meeting with all the talks and activities we have planned for 2015-16; there is a great variety and certainly something to interest everyone.
