Nocton Cricket Club - match report

Ancaster v Nocton, July 10th – Major Hoult Cup – Semi-Final

After winning all three of their Cup qualifying games to reach the semi final Nocton were unlucky to be drawn against Ancaster away from home. Ancaster had already beaten us twice this season – last time they bowled us out for just 8 – but we were determined not to let THAT happen again.

Ancaster won the toss and chose to field, I suppose to see if they could embarrass us again! David Franklin had other ideas and hit 25 of the first 29 runs we scored, but when he was bowled by Joe Bottomley Nocton were 29-3 and in some trouble. Big hitters Dylan and Kyle came to the rescue. Dylan (26) and Kyle (46) took the score quickly to 105 before first Kyle, then Dylan lost their wickets. Rob Garfoot offered some resistance with 16 but Nocton were all out for 142 from just 25 overs.

If we’d had a bit of luck on our side Nocton might have been able to defend a score of 142 but Ancaster openers Anthony Richardson and Joe Bottomley took their time, settled into their innings and made an excellent opening partnership of 132 scoring 47 and 70 respectively. Nocton’s Rob Appleyard troubled Ancaster’s batsmen with his off spinners last time we played at their ground and he was the only Nocton bowler to enjoy any success today taking 3 for 32. It was not enough and Ancaster reached 143 for 3 to win by 7 wickets and take their place in the final on August 28th at Bracebridge Heath.
