Superfast broadband - more delay

'Live to Live Changeover'

Hi Steve,

Just to inform you, the sorry saga for Nocton seems to be continuing I’m afraid.

I see your Project Update for week ending 28th October indicated the ISPs might accept orders: 'Issues have been rectified, services should now be available'.  However, as you can see from the various comments from residents in my last blog update... clearly this is not the case.

The BT Openreach 'When can I get fibre' tool is showing Cabinet 17 to be still under Beta Testing. I have also tried testing various telephone numbers via this tool, relating to lines known to connect to Cab 17, all with the same outcome.

I did note your update was still displayed under ‘Delayed Cabinets’, rather than ‘Completed Cabinet List’. Please will you be so kind to make further enquiries and if there is an ongoing delay, perhaps you could give the reasons.

Kind regards,
Geoff

Good Morning Geoff,

I have spoken with Openreach and the ongoing delay is a result of what they term ' 'Live to Live' changeover. In other words, they are changing circuits on a cabinet that has already been upgraded (Metheringham 3). In order to effect the necessary work, they have to work with all the ISPs to ensure that downtime is agreed.

They are in the process of sorting this out and we should see a result shortly. As soon as I get the estimated completion I will let you know. Openreach has assured me that this is getting the necessary priority.

Regards
Steve

Slow broadband at home? Here's why you may NEVER get the download speeds you pay for

BBC investigation finds that home broadband speeds often fall far behind what is promised by internet providers.

  1. As one of the legacy properties that was until very recently connected to Dunston I've noticed that our broadband speed has now dropped significantly from a breathtaking 2.5mb/s to approximately 0.8 - 1.2mb/s. barely better than dialup. I don't have the time or will to phone up either BT or Sky, but am hoping beyond hope that this is just a temporary measure and will improve once the new box is finally up and running. 1. Hi Jason,I too have noticed a reduced speed. I assume this is due to the longer copper cable required to link us to Cab 17. Once we upgrade to fibre this will no longer be a problem. Regards.

  2. It's getting ridiculous! The Openreach site says "Good news, fibre broadband is available for your number....". It even provides a helpful link so that I can choose from a range of ISPs. Except I can't as "...fibre broadband is not available because of where you live"!

I have seen the slow down too. Down to 0.08Mbps at the weekend.

Thanks Geoff, for keeping the pressure on; without it we wouldn't have got even to where we are.

    1. Thanks Steve. My phone line was down yesterday too. Now reinstated. I assume that it is all related to the 'live to live changeover' whatever it is. I really don't know what is going on with BT - it is ridiculous.

  3. I have just seen the latest Project Update from OnLincolnshire for week ended 11th November 2016: 'Metheringham 3/2 (Nocton) - Planned engineering work scheduled for 21st November'. This is the direct link to the update: http://www.onlincolnshire.org/news/project-updates/project-update-week-ending-11th-november-2016. Hopefully, Steve Brookes will be able to give more detail about the extended delay.

    1. Thanks Andy... we must have been looking at OnLincolnshire almost at the same time - I was in the process of updating the blog when you were drafting your comment. It makes me wonder what the hell is going on inside BT with the provision of fibre to Nocton. Is this just inept, or despite the best attempts at project planning, are there unforeseen problems arising? I doubt we will ever get the answer, but it really doesn't give much faith in the relationship of BT and BT Openreach and how they function together as partners.

  5. Well whatever it is hopefully this work on the 21st will finally complete!! It is somewhat ironic to receive generally poor communication from a communications specialist though!
