Reporting power cuts

New number

Use telephone no 105 to report a power cut

The new, free three digit 105 telephone number to call in a power cut has gone live.

You can call 105 to report or get information about power cuts in your local area.

You can also call 105 if you spot damage to electricity power lines and substations that could put you, or someone else, in danger. If there’s a serious immediate risk, you should call the emergency services too.

105 is a free service, available to people in England, Scotland and Wales.

You can call the number from most landlines and mobile phones.

About 105

Many people don’t know they should contact their local electricity network operator if they have a power cut. They often mistakenly call the electricity supplier they pay their bills to.

That’s why the electricity network operators have introduced 105 – to give you an easy-to-remember number to call that will put you through to the local people who can help.

You can call 105 no matter who you choose to buy electricity from.
What should I do during a power cut?
  • Switch off all electrical appliances that shouldn’t be left unattended, ready for when the power comes back on.
  • Leave a light on so you know when the power outage has been resolved.
  • Check to see if your neighbours are okay.
  • Wrap up warm.
  • Contact your network operator to report the power cut, either by calling 105 or via their other available channels.

Electricity works in village

Western Power

You may recall the project to install new underground powerlines in Nocton village - see my blog entries of 25th September 2015, 28th November 2015 and 3rd February 2016.

Walking the dogs last Sunday afternoon, I happened to notice the mains cable and insulators on Potterhanworth Rd lying unconnected. I managed to speak with a representative of Western Power (Tom Scott) on 12th April who told me there is still work to be completed on this project.

You will see from the photographs below the cables in question. Be assured these are not live, although the cables at the other end of the village have been connected and the sub-station has been replaced with new equipment.

I understand the outstanding project work is located near 'The Timbels' in Potterhanworth Road, Nocton and also at the sub-station in Nocton Park - no timeline was provided for final completion.

New transformer

Work is being carried out to replace the aging electricity transformer on the Bridle Path. This has been in situ since 1954 and requires renewal. The mains cabling has been uncoupled, the old transformer removed by Ainscough crane and the new transformer housing has been delivered to site ready for installation.

A new plinth has to be laid prior to the housing being craned into position. Once this work has been completed, the new transformer can be built and made operational.

Electricity works - almost complete

Road works

The electricity reinforcement works are almost complete through Nocton. The trenching work has now reached the corner of Main Street (near the Post Office) and is shortly to cross the road to progress down the Bridle Path.

Trenching work to lay piping
Field works

You will see a new electricity pole has been erected in the verge opposite the Cricket Club, directly beneath the route of the overhead wires linking the Bridle Path sub-station to the Nocton Estate switch-room (located in the shed near the reservoir). The red power cables near Lower Lodge have already been routed underground to the base of this new electricity pole.

New electricity pole
According to the Western Power map, the underground cabling is shown as being routed along the Bridle Path (to the crossroad) and then left down the Nocton Estate road towards Lower Lodge. It is not immediately clear therefore, why a new electricity pole has been erected, unless this will be a new connection for the overhead wires to the Nocton Estate reservoir switch-room.

Perhaps the overhead connection from the Bridle Path across the field to the new pole will no longer be required?

Hello
A quick update for you re the electricity reinforcement project in Nocton. The works have overrun the original completion date due to extra hard digging in some areas which has slowed progress. The cable laying works are now due for completion in the 11th Dec.

To the Occupier

Our ref: Nocton Village Electricity reinforcement works

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to inform you of the details of the work we are undertaking in your area. We are upgrading and reinforcing our network to improve the security of the electricity supply, and this will involve installing a new high voltage underground cable. The new cable will follow the pink highlighted route as shown on the map on the reverse of this letter. The works are due to take place from 27/09/15 and will last approximately 7 weeks. Your power supply will not be interrupted and we will not need access to your property.

During the works there will be vehicles working in the road, but access to your property will not be obstructed for any longer than necessary.

We will try to keep any disturbance to a minimum throughout the duration of the works.

I apologise if this causes any inconvenience but I can assure you it is necessary for us to carry out this work for the security of your electrical supply network.

If you have any other questions or problems please contact me on any of the details above.

Thank you

Richard Ellis

Emails for clarification

Good morning Richard,

Thank you for the letter notifying residents of the impending reinforcement works.
With many residents having access to the highway for their vehicles along the route of the new supply, can we be assured that access and egress to properties will be maintained across any trench works that may be necessary for laying of the cable?

If there is a likelihood of difficulty in getting vehicles out, it would be useful to know in advance so that arrangements can be made e.g. if one has to get to an airport for a holiday, or if there are other important appointments.

It would be helpful if this can be clarified.

Kind regards,
Geoff

Hello Geoff

As you have seen we will have to dig across access to residents properties. Our contractors are used to carrying out this type of work and will talk to the affected residents before starting work and will work with them to minimise disruption and inconvenience.

I would ask residents to talk to the excavation teams with any concerns they have and if they cannot be resolved please contact me on the numbers below 08:00 – 16:00 weekdays.

It is inevitable that any work of this nature will cause some inconvenience but the work we are carrying out will help ensure the village of Nocton has a more secure and robust electricity supply for years to come.

I ask for residents understanding whist the works are carried out. If you require any further information please contact me.
